Surviving Home Schooling

Home-schooling, remote-learning, three-dimensional-jelly-juggling: Whatever you decide to call it, right now many of our local families are in the thick of lockdown life with kids.

And with 92% of local families keeping their kids home from school, that means thousands of families are managing work, parenting and home-schooling under one roof.

Any way you look at it, this is a challenging time. But, there is hope!

We’ve pulled together some of our top lockdown life hacks for busy parents, - from how to structure your day, to winning snacks and entertainment to break up the monotony.

Short and sweet

Kids, especially primary-aged kids, have a naturally shorter attention span than most adults.

Keep them focussed by setting a timer for each work session, to help them feel in control of when their time on each task is up. We love this Lenovo Smart Clock from JB Hi-Fi, which can set a timer (and so many more things!) via voice instruction. Very clever.

Snack time!

Setting agreed snack times is a great way to add highlights to the day - and even better if you can get the kids involved in helping make the snacks.

So now’s a great time to invest in THE cooking appliance of 2021 - the air fryer! Target Warrawong has a great digital airfryer, which is available for click & collect or home delivery.

Check out this air fryer scone recipe to get morning tea sorted. Bonus: following a recipe is a great way to incorporate some home-schooling maths into your day.

Creative space

If possible, try to carve out a dedicated space for your kids to do their work in. As tempting as it is to set them up at the kitchen table, they’ll be easily distracted by anyone else at home, and it’ll add to the chaos of being under one roof.

If you don’t have a dedicated desk already, check out this sit/stand desk from Big W - ideal for giving the flexibility of working while standing or sitting, with a slim design which can fit into most spaces. While you’re at it, get organised with these colourful document holders or a new set of gel pens. Who doesn’t love some new stationery to get them in the working mood?

Get comfy

Some days comfort is calling, when temperatures drop outside and the idea of sitting at a desk just feels a little too hard.

To get them in the mood, treat your kids to a bit of home schooling from the couch, with the help of this adorable lap desk from Target. Keep their toes cosy while you’re at it, with a pair of snugg slipper boots.

Home schooling never felt comfier.
